Bala Miursal (pomegranate)

'Bala Miursal' is also known as the following 'Russian 25', PI 483110, DPUN 70, and UF ID 08.

It's name means 'Honey Miursal'. Miursal may refer to the village "Miursal" in the 'Agdashsky region' of 'Azerbaijan', this cultivar is commercially grown in Azerbaijan, and is very commonly cultivated in the 'Shirvan region' of 'Azerbaijan'.

This cultivar is a strong grower, that can grow to about 3 meters high, about 9 3/4 feet high. This cultivar has very few thorns.

It's about as cold hardy as the 'Salavatski' cultivar.

This cultivar was test grown in Russia at the 'Dushanbe Turkmenistan Experimental Station', that 'Experimental Station' collected a cutting of 'Bala Miursal' for their experiments on 'May 11th 1976', that cutting was collected from somewhere in the 'Former, Soviet Union', most likely from a farmers field 'since it was a cultivated cultivar at the time', this fact made Bala Miursal's ties to Russia even stronger.

That 'Experimental Station' donated cuttings of 'Bala Miursal' which were imported to the USA 'by the USDA' on January 1982. Every cultivar that the 'Experimental Station' helped to import to the USA was labeled as a Russian pomegranate, regardless of their original origin. A few Months after the cuttings of 'Bala Miursal' were imported to the USA a 'Turkmenistian' government officially took full control of 'Turkmenistian', this event took place about 8 years after 'Turkmenistian' gained it's independence from Russia.

It's fruit are medium to large, up to 1 pound in weight, fruit ranges from about 400-500 grams each with a thick rind. The color of it's fruit skin is a deep crimson. The medium to large arils are dark red and the seeds are hard. The juice is a deep dark red, and has a great sweet-tart balance of flavor, with an aftertaste of 'cranberries'. Fruit matures in October.

It's fruit can be in cold storage for 3 to 4 months, and this cultivar is high production, a mature tree can yield about 90 pounds.

One of the very best cultivars for juicing, between the fruit's 'medium to large size', the fact that 'about 70% of the pomegranate's weight is juice', and the juice is '12 to 20 percent sugar', these facts prove that this cultivars juice is nearly perfect for juicing.

This cultivar has been grown in Georgia since the 70's.
